Madonna of Good Counsel. Hand painted copy on a pottery plate of the original painting by Francesco Arezzo Bonichi (Sarteano 1761).
The original ‘Madonna of Good Counsel’ is preserved in a chapel within the Collegiate Church of San Lorenzo in Sarteano. The Chapel was built, in order to place the painting of the Virgin, after a vote by the citizens of Sarteano who were about to become extinct by a cholera epidemic in the mid-800’s. The Madonna of Good Counsel was then declared the Patron Saint of the town of Sarteano in 1932 and every April 26, the day of the Patron Saint, the sacred image is transported through the streets of Sarteano followed by a procession of the faithful.
In this painting the Virgin expresses her maternal affection towards the Son, as witnessed by the tenderness with which their faces are touching. The intimacy and this strong union between the two is emphasized by mutual exchange of glances.
